The authors investigate observed fluctuations in the brightness of P/Halley when it was further than 5 AU from the sun for evidence of nuclear rotation. Only data of the highest photometric quality is used and the search for periodicity is limited to the range of periods allowed by Vega and Giotto images. The search algorithm is based on a three component harmonic model which serves to improve the physical interpretation of the results as well as providing an effective filter against many spurious responses to noise and possible aperiodic variability in the data. The authors find two acceptable periods between which they are unable to choose: 53 h 58 m ± 2 m; and 54 h 07 m ± 2 m.
