Systematic discrepancies between different authors' measurements of the
equivalent widths of stellar spectral lines are frequently encountered.
Observations are presented that indicate that the equivalent width scale
depends on the degree of exposure of the spectrogram. It is suggested
that photographic adjacency effects could be the cause.
