Formulas for the calculation of the magnitude H and the inclination gamma of sunspot magnetic fields from observations obtained with an instrument comprising only a quarter-wave plate and two orthogonal polarizers fixed at + and - 45 deg to the plate fast axis are derived. The method is shown to be less sensitive than the Stoke-parameter-profile technique to the type of sunspot atmosphere model employed. The use of the standard formula for determining H from the wavelength shift, delta lambda = 0.0000467 gH(lambda squared), is considered, and the significant relative errors involved at various values of H and gamma are given in a table.
