Dougherty (1960) has shown that if the neutral air in the F2-layer is free to move horizontally, the usual diffusion equation for ions becomes greatly altered. The global consequences of this are examined for the noon-day distribution of electrons in equilibrium under the influence of production, diffusion and loss. It appears that the ion-drag mechanism could account for the observed depth of the equatorial trough in Nm, but not the latitudinal width of the trough. It is suggested that electrodynamic drift would act in such a way that the trough calculated here would be widened.
