We are building a point-source spectrograph with low and medium resolving power (R=1000 and 4000) covering 0.85 to 2.5 microns for studies of brown dwarfs and high redshift quasars. Intended for the APO 3.5-m telescope, this instrument will achieve high throughput (almost 0.4, including the telescope) by using a simple optical design, diamond-turned aspheric optics and a Rockwell Hawaii-1RG 1024x1024 MBE array. An R=1000 mode will be used to identify high redshift (z 6) quasars for studies of the reionization epoch and to confirm brown dwarf candidates found in photometric surveys such as SDSS and 2MASS. The R=4000 mode de-blends most of the night sky OH emission lines, exposing more sky-line-free pixels to the object spectrum and allowing us to increase sensitivity through software OH rejection techniques. This mode will be used for classification and atmospheric studies of brown dwarfs and late-type stars, metallicity studies of z 1 emission line galaxies, cataclysmic variable secondaries, and supernova classification, among other things.
