The validity of presently defined empirical relationships devised for thermospheric processes is examined, together with the effects of including expressions for various phenomena into the models. It is shown that the accuracies of diurnal averages for the exosphere are dependent on the level of solar activity considered. Semi-annual oscillations have been detected in the atomic oxygen content from 300-400 km altitude, while discrepancies are still present in models of the He concentrations. The semi-annual variations also change from year-to-year to a maximum of 10 percent of the observed densities. Several attempts to introduce longitudinal and magnetic factors into temperature models are discussed, as are itinerant fluctuations effects. The temperature profile significantly influences the concentration of thermospheric constituents, so account must be taken of solar UV/EUV inputs to the thermospheric energy budget.
