The temporal evolution of a plasma magnetized in a dipole embedded in a uniform magnetic speed is studied under conditions of field reversal using a fully electromagnetic particle simulation code. The magnetic field topology is observed to change from an open to a closed configuration. It is shown that for a wide range of plasma parameters, the reversal of the uniform magnetic field propagates into the system at or slightly below the Alfven velocity. It is further shown that the final topology of the magnetic field in the vicinity of the dipole is practically independent of the initial beta value.
