In collecting together a quantity of matter of planetary mass we produce a body whose macroscopic properties are determined by the atomic behaviour. What can we expect the general properties of such a body to be? What are the special features which will produce a body with planetary properties of the type we observe in the Solar System? How is a planet related to other possible celestial objects? These are the types of questions that will concern us in an attempt to discover the characteristic features of a planet in general terms. (Part 2 of a three-part paper.)
