Attempts to detect a coherent weak lensing signal by foreground clusters of galaxies (known as cosmic shear) at optical wavelengths are limited by the turbulent atmosphere and the need to fit a position-dependent point-spread function that produces distortions comparable to the effect being searched for. At radio wavelengths, the atmospheric effects are not as limiting, as the antenna beam shape is a strong function of the antenna configuration. We will observe three nearby rich Abell galaxy clusters (z < 0.053) at 12mm in a pilot study to search for weak gravitational lensing effects, where background millimetre sources have been gravitationally lensed by the foreground clusters. In particular, we are interested in determining the prospects for detecting a flexion, a second-order gravitational lensing effect where the shapes of background sources are bent, resulting in an offset of the image centroid. There is potential for flexion to be an even more useful probe of cosmological models and the dark matter distribution of clusters than cosmic shear. In this investigation, where we are interested in recovering properties of the shapes of sources, the choice of 12mm provides an appropriate compromise between beam size and resolution.
