The choice of a model to represent the general radiation field in the Galaxy is an important problem in theoretical or observational discussions of the diffuse galactic light. This paper defines a disk model which differs from previous ones in that clumping of the interstellar dust is introduced. The luminosity function is deduced from recent compilations and differs from those previously used, particularly for hot stars. Direct starlight intensities are calculated as a function of galactic latitude, and it is shown that the selected parameters adequately represent the visual observations. Introduction of clumping mitigates a discrepancy between the models' extinction parameters and recent observational determinations of the visual extinction; it is shown that the effect of clumping increases in the ultraviolet. A sample of ultraviolet direct starlight intensities is presented and, the spectrum of the mean specific intensity from the visible down to the Lyman limit is given.
