An instability is investigated which results from the Doppler effect on the very strong self-shielding in interstellar clouds that have an appreciable column density of molecular hydrogen. The time scale of the instability is found to depend on the asymmetry of the self-absorbed lines. With moderately asymmetrical lines the time scale can be about 100,000 yr. Models of interstellar clouds may have to take these effects into account. In particular, the radiation field within the cloud may have to be calculated very much more carefully than previously thought. In addition, several other instabilities are mentioned, but are found to be ineffective. Reddish's (1975) fragmentation mechanism is briefly criticized.
