The discovery and analysis of pre-main-sequence (PMS) eclipsing binary star systems is of critical importance to the study of star formation. With only two such systems presently known, the evolutionary tracks which are used to infer fundamental stellar properties such as masses and ages remain largely uncalibrated by observational mass determinations. We have used our previously obtained KPNO photometric survey of the Orion Nebula Cluster to identify 15 eclipsing binary candidates. We have found one of these, SM790, to also be a double-lined spectroscopic binary. Hence this system is ready for a detailed analysis; we propose here to obtain the necessary observations. Specifically, we request 1) 20 high-resolution spectra with the HET/HRS providing a precise double- lined orbit and 2) BVRI imaging data with the CTIO 0.9m to provide multi- color light curves. SM 790 is the first sub-solar-mass PMS eclipsing binary system. It will thus be a key datum for calibrating this critical domain of evolutionary track theory.
