The intensities of QSO ultraviolet emission lines were investigated with the aid of detailed photoionization model calculations. In an effort directed toward understanding recent observations, namely the low ratios of UV to optical emission lines, consideration was given to such processes as charge-exchange reactions between ions of charge +3 or greater and neutral hydrogen, collisional quenching of UV resonance lines, and attenuation by dust. Particular attention was paid to the behavior of C 4 lambda 1549.
