A numerical study, employing the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, was performed to investigate deep convective sources of gravity waves over the maritime continent region on 17 November 2001. These sources vary across a range of scales from very localized convection to larger storm systems. A spectral analysis of the resultant gravity activity over the region reveals a broad distribution of phase speeds, frequencies, and horizontal and vertical wavelengths. In addition to the regional analysis, a two-way nested simulation of an observed squall line event over northern Australia is presented for comparison to a source spectrum parameterization. Of particular interest are the high frequency, large vertical wavelength portions of the spectrum, which consist of waves with sufficiently high phase speeds to readily propagate to high altitudes. It has been speculated that gravity waves reaching ionospheric altitudes have the potential to seed disturbances such as equatorial spread-F (ESF). These disturbances degrade satellite radio communications and GPS signals by causing rapid and random amplitude and phase fluctuations, also known as scintillation.
