In this talk we present the results of numerical simulations of the evolution and eruptions of the coronal magnetic arcades in response to the rotating photospheric flows. The dynamics of the system is discussed and it is shown that the model reproduces and explains a number of distinct observations. In particular, we propose an explanation for the formation and evolution of sigmoids and overlaying arcades. The results of simulations are compared with observations and topological properties of the three-dimensional magnetic field configurations are shown to account for the observed characteristics of CMEs. The observational studies that can be conducted to test the model are also discussed.
