A single crystal block of [001] oriented metallic lithium is proposed as the basis for a broad band Thomson-scattering X-ray polarimeter and, simultaneously, as a high efficiency Bragg scattering polarimeter which may be tuned to the X-ray lines of stripped iron atoms at about 6.7 keV. The proposed polarimeter is simpler and therefore lighter than earlier designs but provides both higher intensity and lower background than its predecessors. It is compatible with existing X-ray detectors which provide moderate energy and position resolution.
