The apparent longitudinal acceleration of the moon is analyzed on the basis of published data. The discrepancy between the value calculated from long-term observations (from the period 1681-1936, plus some ancient data) as used by Jeffreys (1962, 1982), and the lunar laser-ranging data (Dickey et al., 1983) is estimated at about 9 x 10 to the -23rd rad/sec sq. This discrepancy is found to be unaccounted for by the rms errors of the methods used, and an explanation based on internal geodynamics and the acceleration of the earth and its rotation is proposed. This model requires a decrease in the principal moment of inertia of the earth of about 3.2 x 10 to the -29th m2 kg/cy and rules out an expansion of the earth during the period of the observations.
