The value of the high temperature limit of the Grueneisen parameter, gamma(o), is derived on the basis of new experimental data on the pressure dependence of the melting temperature of iron. The calculation was performed within the framework of the theory of melting of metals proposed by Scholler at el. (1989), with and without modifications due to taking the pressure dependence of the ration gamma/V into account. The results of both calculations are in agreement with the values quoted in recent literature. Possible causes of the discrepancies are discussed. A change of gamma occurring at P of about 120-130 GPa indicates the occurrence of a phase transition, whose existence is confirmed within a particular semiclassical theory of dense matter.
