The relationship between Alfven surface wave speeds across a small plasma layer as a causative agent for surface heating due to resonance across the discontinuity is discussed for low-beta plasmas. The interface occurs between two compressible conducting media, and the Alfven speed is considered to be supersonic on both sides of the interface. The dispersion relation and the pressure balance condition are defined analytically and a critical Alfven speed is identified for obtaining an evanescent solution. Alfven velocities in the solar corona are shown to be around 1000 km/sec, while an Alfven surface wave will require velocities of 1230 km/sec. The attenuation of the propagating surface waves is discussed.
