The dissociation constant of D 2 O is significantly lower than that of H 2 O, hence hydroxyl and hydronium ions have very much lower deuterium contents than the water from which they form. If the concentration of either of these ions becomes significant, its presence will effect the hydrogen isotope fractionation between any hydrogen bearing phase and the total solution.
