The experimental data provided by the KASCADE experiment are a basis for a multi-component analysis towards a determination of the mass composition and energy spectrum in the knee region. We discuss the method and procedures used for determining the energy and mass of the primary particle by applying neural networks and nonparametric classification and estimation methods, emphasising the neccessity of comparing alternative shower development models. Applying to measured KASCADE data first results of the differential energy flux and relative abundances of primary particles in cosmic rays are presented.
