The paper presents a fully nonlinear theory based on a two-fluid model for the ions and electrons, developed for the purpose of answering one of the fundamental issues raised by the radar observations, namely that of large aspect angle echoes in the auroral E regions. The theory proposed is based on the possibility of the development of ion acoustic turbulence along the magnetic field lines, along with the assumption that the plasma is already turbulent in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. The first assumption makes it possible to estimate an anomalous electron collision frequency along the field lines, while the second assumption allows the use of mode coupling to estimate the frequency broadening, making it possible to obtain an upper limit for the aspect angles.
