Spiral Galaxies: Dynamo Theory, Accretion Disks: Dynamo Theory
Scientific paper
The large scale magnetic fields of spiral galaxies and accretion disks are ascribed to a dynamo. Nonlinear dynamo calculations including magnetic buoyancy and α-quenching show that the most preferred magnetic field is of quadrupolar type. This agrees with the observations. In several cases dipolar or oscillating fields occur, where the latter oscillate in magnetic energy and the symmetry property.
