An improved whistler direction finder has been developed which is capable of distinguishing among waves with oblique incidence with elliptical polarization, vertical incidence with nearly circular polarization and horizontal incidence with nearly linear polarization, and of producing an accurate estimate of wave arrival direction and polarization. The device consists of an antenna-receiver system, signal analyzer and data recording system, filter frequency switching circuit, and sonagraphic display. Outputs from eight detectors allow the classification of the wave incidence situation and the subsequent calculation of arrival direction and polarization. A real-time whistler analyzer may be used with the direction finder to time whistler occurrences and measure whistler dispersion. The direction finder has been found to provide satisfactory results in the measurement of whistlers which have emerged from the ionosphere near the observing site when the direct ray is dominant, or from great distances when the waveguide QTM mode is dominant.
