The symbiotic star Z And, after a long period of quiescence underwent in March 1984 a luminosity brightening which could be the beginning of a new active phase of the star. From a preliminary analysis of the IUE observations made on April 6 the authors found a large decrease of the continuum temperature. The high ionization lines of He II, C IV and O III appear stonger, while N V remained nearly constant and, contrary to the expectation, O I weakened. This behaviour during outburst appears different from the UV variability observed during the preoutburst quiescent phase.
