A new empirical model of the plasmapause location has been developed using density data from the plasma wave receiver onboard the CRRES spacecraft for nearly 1000 orbits. The plasmapause location is expressed as a function of Kp(previous 12 hour maximum) and local time. The model gives the mean location of the plasmapause as well as the standard deviation. The average location of the plasmapause in the 0-15 LT sector is essentially identical to that found by Carpenter and Anderson [J. Geophys. Res. 1992]. However, since the CRRES model contains a factor of 5 more plasmapause crossings than Carpenter and Anderson's model the behavior of the plasmapause position can be examined as a function of Local Time and geomagnetic activity statistically. We found a marked noon-midnight asymmetry with the plasmapause located on average an L-shell farther from the Earth at midnight than in the noon sector. This is opposite to the noon-midnight asymmetry found by Gringauz and Bezrukikh [JATP, 1976]. Though part of this asymmetry may be due to limited orbital coverage in the noon sector (CRRES sampled only out to an L of 5 in the several hours around noon due to the untimely spacecraft failure) not all of the asymmetry can be attributed to this orbital bias. This empirical model is continuous in local time and valid for four different activity levels and can contribute to inner magnetospheric modeling efforts including understanding the new global images from the IMAGE satellite.
