The two-dimensional Fourier transform is employed in many radio astronomical problems. The availability of only a finite data set (autocorrelation function values) does not permit an exact evaluation of the power spectrum and causes 'ringing' or noise-like features to appear. By extending the Wiener-filter theory (autoregressive method) and the maximum-entropy method to two dimensions, one obtains a spectrum in which these undesirable effects are reduced or, sometimes, eliminated. It is shown how these methods can be applied in two or more dimensions, and numerical algorithms are provided for their rapid computer execution.
