Carbon cluster ions are abundant in flames, interstellar space, and comet tails. In this paper, the fragmentation of metastable positive carbon cluster ions is reported. All C(n)(+) clusters with n = 5 or larger exhibit metastable reactions. The data are analyzed in terms of the possible structures of both the metastable ion and the neutral and ionic products.
