It is suggested that the Claverie et al. (1981) observations of a cutoff frequency in the acoustic modes of the sun can help to determine the mean molecular weight, and therefore the He abundance, in the visible layers of the solar atmosphere. Assuming a minimum photospheric temperature of 4400 K + or - 200 K, an He abundance of 0.42 + or - 0.04 is obtained. This is consistent with the result of 0.38 obtained by Unsold (1969).
