A new technique for the diagnostics of the magnetospheric plasma has been implemented for the first time via the Geos satellite. The technique involves the excitation of plasma resonances by a dipole antenna aboard the satellite. A typical ionogram, recorded when the satellite was near its apogee, is presented and attention is given to such parameters of diagnostics as the harmonics of the electron gyrofrequency in the plasma and the f-Q plasma frequency. It is found that electron density and magnetic field strength are derived reliably and accurately from the resonances observed. It is hoped that temperature and electric field strength will be deduced from the data as well.
