The question of whether the material distribution in any cosmological model can be interpreted unambiguously is considered. It is argued that the answer is negative, and it is shown that Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models in general, and the zero-curvature dust model in particular, do not have unique interpretations. One of the most interesting consequences of this result is that small variations in a cosmological model may lead to major changes in the model's predictions.
