The linear stability of a three-body configuration is studied, assuming the mass of the third body to be infinitesimal (the first body is a rigid spherical shell filled with an incompressible fluid, the second is a mass point outside the shell). The third body is depicted as moving inside the shell, acted on by the attraction of the second body and the fluid in the first body. A solution is proposed, whereby the second body describes a Keplerian orbit around the first and third bodies. Both circular and elliptic orbits are considered, with the circular orbit found to be the more stable. Applications of the problem include the effect of the moon upon the earth's core.
