A new index of the 27-day recurrence of large geomagnetic disturbances over the past 100 years are proposed and calculated. Time variations of this index are correlated with the latitudinal distribution of solar magnetic fields and prominences during cycles 20 and 21. It is suggested that the recurrence of high geomagnetic activity at the solar-activity decline phase is associated with solar-wind streams issuing from a specific solar global magnetic field configuration of the preceding 11-year cycle.
