Space weather forecasters at NOAA are scrambling to incorporate real-time data from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which this month began a planned 5-year mission to study the Sun in intricate, high-resolution detail around the clock. Of immediate interest are images from SDO's Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), a quartet of telescopes covering 10 wavelength bands in the extreme ultraviolet, ultraviolet, and visible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The AIA instrument is providing unprecedented information about where potentially hazardous explosions in the Sun's corona, called coronal mass ejections (CMEs), are forming.
