A design of field mill is presented which, while giving the sign of the field as well as the magnitude, uses only one rotor and one stator and no other form of pick-up. The simplicity of design also extends to the electronics which does not include the phase sensitive detector normally required. An asymmetric waveform is generated. The sign of the asymmetry depends on the sign of the field and this is detected as a steady, positive or negative direct current.
