It is proposed that a proof that the red shift is connected with cosmological expansion can be obtained by relating the duration of the maximum of a distant supernova with that of a nearer one. The proof is attempted on the basis of light curves of a typical type I supernova, and it is indicated that the proof is valid only when the photometric measurements are extended to very faint magnitudes.
