Solar activity is known to vary with a roughly centennial scale (the so called Gleissberg cycle) with the two latest minima occurring at the turns of the 18th/19th and 19th/20th centuries. We have recently shown a new pattern in the Sun's long-term north-south asymmetry measured by solar wind speed and geomangetic activity. We find that this north-south asymmetry was large when solar activity was large in mid-19th century and during the more recent, active solar cycles since 1930's. This suggests a correlation between the Sun's long-term magnetic activity and its asymmetry. We discuss this connection and models explaining it. We note that this connection may offer a possibility to explain the recent rise in solar activity.
