A reformulation of the kinetic theory of N-body gravitational systems,
retaining periodic trajectories in the mean field, leads to an
intrinsically non-markovian evolution equation, and a √N dependence
of the relaxation time. Explicit calculations are carried out for
one-dimensional systems.
