A new algorithm for determining nitrogen abundances using easily
observed lines of nitrogen and oxygen will be presented. These
abundances are used systematically to re-examine the chemical gradients
present in galaxies, as well as addressing the question of whether
nitrogen is manufactured as a primary or secondary element in stars..
