Scientific paper

It is shown that ionic entrainment in the E-region leads to the formation of the vortex motion of neutral gas in the vicinity of an auroral arc. Ion-accelerated particles of the neutral gas stream through the arc and return above and below the arc region. The characteristic time of the establishment of this vortex motion is 1-2 hours. These vortex motions lead to a significant distortion of the pattern of electric fields in the vicinity of an auroral arc.
