We present the results of extensive photometric and polarimetric observations of the AM Herculis type binary 2A 0311-227 made during the 1979 observing season. Light curves at wavelengths from 0.36 to 2.2 μm and polarization data from 0.44 to 1.25 μm have been obtained.
The observations show substantial wavelength dependence in the form of the light curves and polarization curves. We find that many features of the observations are consistent with recent calculations of the polarized cyclotron radiation from magnetic accretion columns. We discuss a model for the system in terms of a single accretion column which is optically thick to cyclotron radiation in the infrared becoming optically thin at shorter wavelengths.
