The multiple-scale method is used to describe the deceleration of the motion of a body rotating in the spherically symmetric gravitational field by the rarefied, exponentially inhomogeneous atmosphere. This method provides the uniform expansion of the sought-for functions in a small problem parameter and the explicit dependence on all fast and slow variables used in the problem. A quite general scheme is proposed for introducing variables of different scales in the form of power series in a small parameter. A special choice of the functions entering into these series provides a simple dependence of the sought functions on slow variables. The calculation is performed for elliptical orbits up to the fourth power of eccentricity.
