Jovian perturbation of the orbits of a sample of short-period, low-inclination comets are calculated in a Monte Carlo simulation and used to study cometary dynamics. Perturbations of the osculating orbital elements for a sample of 60,000 fictitious comets with random initial elements are calculated by the integration of the motion of each comet for a time interval equal to the initial orbital period in the sun-Jupiter elliptic restricted three-body problem. Statistical analysis of perturbation of total orbital energy reveals the tails of the energy perturbation distributions to be markedly asymmetric for certain classes of comets, particularly those with perihelion- or aphelion-tangent orbits. Distributions of perturbations of cometary inclinations, ascending node longitudes and arguments of perihelia are also obtained. The calculation is found to provide an accurate result for the minimum distance between the comet and Jupiter in their unperturbed orbits, however the minimum distance is not a very reliable indicator of the size of the perturbations.
