In order to improve the accuracy of the estimated interplanetary shock parameters (orientation, propagation speed, and asymptotic magnetofluid states on both sides of the shock), we have modified the nonlinear least squares fitting technique of Szabo [1994] by fitting simultaneously the shock normal direction and propagation speed. As input parameters, the technique uses magnetic field and plasma measurements on both sides of the shock by a single spacecraft. The modification of the technique leads to a more accurate determination of the shock propagation speed, and hence to a more accurate determination of the subsequently derived parameters. We demonstrate application and limits of the technique by examples of synthetic and real interplanetary shocks.
