The budget of total odd nitrogen, NO(y), is examined with a two-dimensional diabatic circulation model of the stratosphere and the troposphere. The model is used to simulate the response of odd O and N species to the 11-yr solar cycle variations. The results are discussed in terms of influence of various NO(y) production processes in various regions. The processes include lightning, N2O oxidation, galactic cosmic rays, surface sources, and high-latitude input from the thermosphere and mesosphere.
