A version of the ECHAM5 global circulation model that extends from the surface to about 250 km of altitude is presented. The inclusion in the model of specific phenomena that are relevant to the mesophere/lower thermosphere (MLT) region, such as molecular diffusion, constituent separation, ion drag, Joule heating, non-LTE longwave emission, and solar heating are described. The model climatology is compared with existing data of the MLT region, and perspectives of future scientific research using this model are discussed.
