Based on the accumulated experimental data, a classification of solar cosmic ray events is proposed which uses the proton fluence criterion. It is shown that the energy spectra of both proton fluences and peak fluxes, characterizing solar cosmic ray events of different intensities in the mean, are well described by exponential functions of the particle impulse for proton energies greater than 30 MeV.
