A model is presented to describe soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs), a class of astrophysical gamma-ray burst with rapid but nonperiodic recurrence, soft spectra, and short durations. It is suggested that SGRs are due to comets falling onto a magnetized white dwarf. The results of modeling are compared to observations of the three observed SGRs. It is found that the model produces correct spectra and timescales, and solves statistical difficulties in the neutron-star model.
