The authors investigate the radiative properties of a relativistic, collimated jet, which is accelerated because of adiabatic expansion. Both the steady jet spectrum and the time and frequency behaviour of a particle-enriched perturbation are obtained. The authors find that a large region of the parameter space corresponds to outbursts, whose amplitude is nearly frequency independent; also, the accelerated motion of the jet greatly shortens the outburst time scales at long wavelengths, relative to the wavelengths emitted at the jet's basis. The relevance of these results to the phenomenon of low frequency variability is discussed, and a promising correspondence is found with a subclass of sources typified by BL Lac, where the frequency evolution of the outburst shows some kind of continuity.
