Solar Corona: Current Sheets
Scientific paper
The author has constructed a model of a current sheet which is created when plasma flows in the vicinity of a singular magnetic field line. He allows the total mass of plasma in the sheet to change slowly as a function of time. The reduction in the total mass of plasma in the sheet leads to a redistribution of plasma density such that its density remains practically invariant in the center of the sheet, while nearby it is reduced. (This is necessary if the magnetic field is to undergo rapid reconnection in the sheet). The author has derived a criterion for the fall-off in the total mass of plasma in the sheet as a function of time. Estimates for the situations in the solar corona indicate the possibility of a solar flare mechanism associated with a current sheet. The author shows that, as a result of effective dissipation, a longitudinal magnetic field does not have any substantial effect on the current sheet.
